Earthdog
Join us for an exciting new class at Gemini Dogs! Earthdog training helps encourage and preserve the natural instinct of earth terriers, while also encouraging and preserving the natural hunting abilities of all terriers.
Dachshunds and small terriers were traditionally used to hunt and track a variety of game (rabbits, badgers, foxes, etc.). Prey animals of this sort typically live in tunnels (or dens) that they dig in the ground. The "earthdog", regardless of breed, was developed to follow their game (quarry) down into it's den and either flush it to the surface or hold it until the hunter dug down to them.
In modern times, an earthdog trial tests Dachshunds and small terriers for the ir working abilities and instinct. Earthdog den trials involve underground tunnels that dogs must negotiate, while scenting a rat (the quarry). The dog must follow the scent to the quarry and then work the quarry. Depending on the sanctioning organization, working means barking, scratching, staring, or pawing at it, although the quarry is protected at all times.
Class Objectives
This class concentrates on introducing dogs to tunnels and rats. We will also work on upper-level skills and problemsolving. Classes will be indoors above ground with tunnel liners and tarps used to simulate darkness. Live rats will be used but will not be harmed!
More info at AKC and American Working Terrier Association.
Earthdog is usually for small terriers and dachshunds, but any small dog that can fit into a 9-inch tunnel can participate.
